Hope this lends some assistance to those who need it. “Installing APE Manual Cam Chain Tensioner on an 09 R1″ Watch Garage Endeavors Installation Video here Garage Endeavors Tech Article – “What Is That Terrible Noise?” THE PROBLEM As phenomenal as the 2009-10 Yamaha R1 is, it does come with it’s faults. Some are subtle……. some not so subtle, however in the opinion of Garage Endeavors, they are all important to address as soon as possible. One of these issues we have found is with the OEM or “stock” Cam Chain Tensioner. Our 2009 R1 test bike began showing signs of tensioner trouble relatively early in her mileage ………… at just around 4000 miles. Anyone who has experienced a bad cam chain tensioner knows……. it can make an awful, clacking sound that would raise the neck hairs of even the most advanced motorcycle mechanic. AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION To eliminate this problem we installed an APE manual cam chain tensioner in place of the factory automatic one. Using basic tools, the installation was completed in around 20 minutes and immediately resolved our loose cam chain issue. We have been testing at the track and out on the streets for well over a month with the tensioner installed and we have had no issues and has required no adjustments.
